I was part of a conversation recently where someone had joined a group that was teaching on the Torah. In their desire to chase after the blessings listed out in Deuteronomy 28 as their life was riddled with much torment and physical ailments, they had been rigidly trying to obey the letter of the law in order to gain God’s approval. The discovery that the legalistic burden being laid upon them by their pharisaical teachers who weren’t obeying behind closed doors crushed them. They manifested Malachi 2:8-9.
Malachi 2:8-9 – 8 But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the Lord of hosts. 9 Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.
Due to the deep wound of betrayal, they were now walking in defiant rebellion under the lie that there is no value nor hope in obedience. Rules without relationship will lead to rebellion. They fell into the trap of Malachi 3:13-15.
Malachi 3:13-15 13 Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee?14 Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts?15 And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.
What both the teachers and the student of that Torah group missed was the Spirit of the Law. Romans 4:17 says,
Romans 4:17 – “For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.”
If VOLUNTARY obedience doesn’t bring joy and outflow of love from your heart, there’s a monkey wrench somewhere. It could be an orphan spirit, a spirit of striving/performance/perfection, or a simple absence of the Holy Spirit that enables obedience to the Spirit of the Law due to a lack of teaching/false doctrine.
The verse brought to mind:
2 Corinthians 3: 14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ. 15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart. 16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away. 17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
The key is turning TO Jesus, the person, which requires opening our heart in vulnerable and transparent trusting relationship…a feat difficult for those who have been deeply wounded by relationships in the past.
We frequently hear that last verse about where the Spirit of the LORD is, there is liberty taken completely out of context. How often do preachers share that verse in context with understanding the Law of Moses in a way that brings freedom instead of the bondage it’s usually associated with?
In the early church in Acts, we see the pattern of salvation, baptism of water which had to be followed by baptism of the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in tongues to be considered complete THEN learning the scriptures in the Synagogue. (*Cornelius was an exception where he spoke in tongues FIRST, then got baptized in water). That would solve a lot of problems with legalism/pharisaism as well as the flip side of people feeling frustrated with their powerless relationship with the LORD.
I can already see the eyebrows raising and the spirits spazzing to stir up skepticism and unbelief. Where does it say Baptism of the Holy Spirit, with evidence of speaking in tongues / prophesying, is necessary for completion???
Acts 8: 12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. 14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
Acts 19: 2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
Acts 2:4 – 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
And for an Old Testament passage:
Num 11:25 – And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon [Moses], and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease. (**Other translations like the NIV & ESV say “they did not prophesy again” so I looked into the Hebrew to see which was correct. “Did not cease” = yacaph = to add increase, do again, to do more, to be joined. The KJV is correct.)
It is hard to worship our GOD in SPIRIT and truth when we don’t have the baptism of the Holy Spirit which causes us to be born again in the spirit. This is why so many people struggle to hear God’s voice in their hearts. As a child of God ordained to be a prophetic evangelist, when I woke up to the fact that I was a sinner and needed to repent, I suddenly had a strong desire to study the scriptures. However, it wasn’t until I repented of the ungodly belief that the spiritual gifts died with the apostolic age and received the baptism of the Holy Spirit in my car as I drove to Fort Erie, that the scriptures came alive. I was able to understand them in my heart. It was shortly after that a couple of seasoned seers confirmed my “prophesies”, to which my response was, “Come again?” I had no clue what I was prophesying. I was simply being me, long-winded with convoluted bunny trails the often left me wondering why I had said seemingly unrelated things in the flow of conversation. It required being mentored by mature prophets to discern how my gifting operated (and I’m discovering new facets each year!). That’s why we need the Ephesians 4 Five-fold ministry to equip the saints and bring unity.
Eph 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
Now I want to confront an issue that is prevalent in the charismatic circles – false tongues. Whatever the LORD does, the devil will try to counterfeit so don’t choke. Simply be discerning and do some house-cleaning as needed. There’s no shame in admitting we tripped and skinned our knee. The shame lies in the pity party of refusing to get back up and try again. Where there is a baptism of the Holy Spirit, the counterfeit is the Kundalini spirit and is very common in Pentecostal circles from what I’ve observed. (Might be elsewhere, just that this is my area of exposure thus far.)
2 Corinthians 11:3-4 – 3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.
1 John 4:1-3 – Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
The Kundalini Spirit has been around for millennia but most would know about California’s Azuza Street flash in the pan 3 yr revival with William J. Seymour. Charles Parham, the father of Pentecost in the 1900’s, was the one who originally taught Seymour about the baptism of the Holy Spirit with evidence of tongues. When he heard about the fanaticism going on, he went to California and did deliverance on Seymour’s congregants who were willing. (Read “God’s Generals” by Robert Liardon). The revival started out healthy, then got twisted with Seymour’s spiritual pride and orphan spirit, at which point the LORD shut it down. The True Holy Spirit will not cohabitate with a spirit of Pride but a Kundalini spirit will feast upon pride. The Azuza congregation later revived in 1911 under William H. Durham. Notice that almost no one knows who HE is? It wasn’t about making a name for himself but about the LORD.
The Kundalini spirit manifests with flamboyant behavior/false signs/wonders that draws attention to the person/sign and the extreme emotional highs, pulling the focus away from communing with God to observing the people around us. Pharaoh’s sorcerers were capable of copying the first few plagues upon Egypt but a time came when they could no longer mimic the miracles. A time comes when there’s a distinction between the righteous and the wicked. Another marker of the Kundalini spirit is the absence of long-term fruit because repentance of sin isn’t present. Matt 3:8 NLT says it clear enough –
Matt 3:8 NLT – “Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.”
People who are hungry for approval and attention from man and aren’t confident in their identity in Christ are especially vulnerable to this spirit because it promises power and p. The manifestations will have a sense of forcefulness, as if you can’t control what your body is doing. You’ll see spirits of rebellion & stubbornness & pride tend to go part and parcel with Kundalini. I’ve also started noticing there is a pattern of those who have freemasonry/luciferianism or yoga in their background and being contaminated with the Kundalini, being deceived it’s the Holy Spirit.
Yes, there can be emotional experiences with the True Holy Spirit because there is such deep healing in the presence of joy, however the focus will always drawing us TO the Heavenly Father with such gentleness and quiet peace. Another thing I’ve observed is the increased hunger for and deeper understanding when reading God’s word and for prayer (conversation with God). There will be observable changes in the person’s life as they develop such a hatred for sin leading to heart-level repentance and desire to walk into holiness and humility that crucifies the desires of the flesh. The True Holy Spirit will teach us the Fear of the LORD whereas the Kundalini spirit will cause a dismissing or outright despising of God’s commandments. If your church says yoga is ok or even practices it in their programs, you know it is contaminated. If we are listening and submitting to the Spirit’s leading, the Holy Spirit will direct our learning paths, whether through dreams or internet links/books or having people travel halfway across the world to stay with us to give us 1:1 instruction.
Here’s a link to a thorough deliverance prayer for the Kundalini spirit –
Kundalini-Renunciation_July-2018.pdf
It takes roughly 2 hrs. to go through. If you find it difficult to read through and complete, that’s a sure sign the Kundalini spirit is there and doesn’t want to be evicted but keep persevering. It took one lady 3 days to complete and her comprehension of the Bible afterward shot through the roof. Then humbly ask the Holy Spirit to baptize you with the real deal. You don’t NEED a person to lay hands on you, as Cornelius is a Biblical example. Charles Parham’s students at Stone’s Folly & John J. Lake is another couple in history. God will grant the Holy Spirit to those who are hungry and seeking after Him with all their hearts. After Lake’s baptism of the Holy Spirit, he went to Africa as a missionary and ministered during a deadly plague, where scientific studies confirmed the plague bacteria died as soon as it touched his skin that was filled with the presence of God.
I’ll end off this bunny trail meandering for now and start a different blog post for the next hop in topic.
